Assam Handcrafted Teas
Indigenous Assamese peoples were legally not allowed to handcraft the teas from their own backyard for 180-years! It was only in January 2015, after incredible pressure from over 200,000 indigenous small tea growers, the Government of India legalized the artisanal production of teas by farmers in Assam and surrounding regions.
Kontreg was on the forefront of helping small farmers learn the art of handcrafting teas, and bringing to market these small batches of handmade teas. We were the first company to actually export handmade teas from Assam in November 2015.
We also source traditional handmade teas that are still being made in the remote indigenous communities of Patkai Hills. These teas are made traditionally, usually as a pickle or as smoked teas.
Kontreg can offer you handmade teas from small farmers in Assam in small lots of 50-kg to 200-kgs. We not only help you source these teas, if you desire we can also help you build direct relationships with these small tea growers in remote regions of Assam.
Almost all of these teas are organically grown, and there are also a few cooperatives that are transitioning to certified-organic status. The flavor profile of these teas are more aromatic than factory-made teas, but they are lighter in flavor and strength. These teas are more expensive then even the best teas made in established tea factories - but still quite affordable for high end markets.
